While I have been in therapy for much of my life and a twelve step program for fifteen years, understanding the impact of my childhood trauma, along with learning more about what happened in the generations proceeding my birth, has been like fitting a giant puzzle together, one piece at a time. I had already researched my family history during my fifteen years of sobriety in an effort to lift the veil of secrecy surrounding my family’s traumas. Mark Wolynn, the director of The Family Constellation Institute, uses stories of his clients and research to demonstrate the impact of long term trauma on individual’s feelings, actions, and relationships, even if they are one or more generations removed from a traumatic event.
